Another day, another vindictive prosecution motion against President Trump’s Department of Justice. This time, the challenge comes from the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), which has filed a 47-page motion to dismiss criminal fraud and money laundering charges. The SPLC flatly claims these charges are the culmination of a top-down, retributive campaign directed straight from the Oval Office to punish a political enemy.
Although proving vindictive prosecution is traditionally a monumental hurdle, that’s not true in this administration. From the dismissal of charges against Kilmar Abrego Garcia to the administration’s public labeling of the SPLC as a “partisan smear machine,” the White House continues to say the quiet part out loud. If you are going to leverage the power of the federal government against your political adversaries, you better have the law and the facts on your side.
